Dr Dave Howells qualified as a doctor in Cardiff in 2001.  He has worked in the field of Mental Health for over 20 years specialising in Old Age Psychiatry from 2007.  

 

He has previously worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist for the NHS, and has also worked as a Second Opinion Appointed Doctor (SOAD) for Health Inspectorate Wales (HIW).

 

Dr Dave Howells is a member of the Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society (MCCS) and has received training on the indications, prescription and use of Cannabis-Based Medicinal Products (CBMPs). 

 

He is a motivated, compassionate psychiatrist who understands the benefits some patients report from cannabis-based products.  His wish is for standardised, quality assured CBMPs to be available for patients (where appropriate) to have a trial of these therapies for their condition(s).

 

Dr Howells encourages all patients to enrol in the Drug Science TWENTY21 registry, so that their experiences can be recorded and analysed, building an evidence base to inform future prescribing.  

 

Dr Dave Howells is a founding member of Cannabis Clinic Cardiff, set up in 2021 to help address the unmet needs of mental health patients who may benefit from a prescription of medicinal cannabis.
